After breakfast today we got started with serious sightseeing.  We loaded our luggage and left Sorrento around 8:00 AM and got on our bus to Pompeii. It is a  city in total ruins, but it does not take too much imagination to understand the splendor of this city before it was destroyed by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.  The fact that we could still see smoke arising from the top of the mountain made it all the more real.

As we arrived in Pompeii it was raining and we had to all buy rain gear since very few of us brought it with us.  After Pompeii we had a 4 hr drive to get to our hotel.  We arrived at the hotel by 5:00 PM but didn't get checked in until 6 since we kept driving around looking for the front of the hotel.
